The California Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative (MMBI) promises to usher in a new era of broadband access and affordability for all Californians, including those who have often found it difficult or impossible to take advantage of everything broadband has to offer, by making it easier for last-mile providers throughout the state to reach customers and provide services.
As a result, residents, businesses, legislators, service providers, and advocates throughout the state are interested in learning more about this project. We've created and aggregated resources for everyone who wants to learn more about middle-mile networks in general, how this project began, how your community can benefit from the MMBI, and how you or your business can participate in its creation.
CENIC California Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative, LLC dba GOLDENSTATENET is publishing its ongoing Middle-Mile Network Series of downloadable PDFs to address what middle-mile networks are, what they will do for last-mile networks and their customers, and how public and private networks will work together in one of the most geographically and socially diverse states in the nation.
California's Middle-Mile Broadband Infrastructure (MMBI) will consist of thousands of miles of both built and leased fiber-optic cable planned to penetrate into all areas of the state. You can find the latest maps of the backbone and regional routes at the CA Department of Technology's website.
California has begun work on the Middle-Mile Broadband Infrastructure in order to ensure that all Californians have access to the kind of future-facing and affordable broadband needed to participate fully in the 21st century. Historically un- and underserved communities have a significant stake in the project and may find links we've collected useful.
The CA Department of Technology has released a Request for Information relating to the CA MMBI. If you or your business would like to learn more about how you can participate, you can learn more about the project here.
The Middle-Mile Advisory Committee (MMAC) monitors the development and construction of the MMBI. Internet service providers and other eligible entities can connect and deliver service through the new middle-mile network, and to ensure that the public is up-to-date on the latest developments, we have provided our presentation materials and linked to agendas, meeting notes, and more provided by the CA Department of Technology.
The CCMMBI LLC. dba GOLDENSTATENET kicked off with a set of 18 projects located throughout the state as proofs of concept that the MMBI could be successfully designed and implemented in as geographically and socially diverse a state as California. Located throughout the state, these initial 18 projects demonstrated that such an infrastructure was indeed possible and also functioned to help develop design and construction processes.
